Willa’s Fight for a Second Chance: From Broken to Bonding
Willa’s journey to safety began when a compassionate woman found her lying helpless on a bridge near the Wilgerivier. It was clear she was in immense pain, unable to move, most likely after being struck by a car. Her injuries were severe, the kind that could only come from a violent impact, yet somehow, she had survived. Sadly, the trauma Willa endured was so severe that she aborted her unborn puppies. By the time she reached us, her body was towards the end of the painful process of letting them go.
No one knows how long Willa had been suffering, exposed to the relentless 38-degree Celcius heat with no shelter, no comfort, and no hope. But the woman who found her saw that flicker of life still burning in her eyes and knew she couldn’t leave her behind. She crafted a makeshift splint, and after days of earning Willa’s trust, she finally managed to get her into the car and bring her straight to our clinic.
Willa’s injuries are extensive and serious. Here’s a breakdown of what she’s going through:
- Fractured Right Tibia (Lower Leg Bone): One of the main bones in her right back leg is broken, requiring specialist surgery to fix it.
- Multiple Skin Wounds: She has various cuts and scrapes on her body, likely from being hit by the vehicle and struggling to move while injured.
- Pelvic Fractures (Left Acetabulum, Ischium, and Pubic Bones): Her pelvis, has several fractures on the left-hand side.
- Natural Abortion: When Willa came in, she was busy aborting her own babies due to the trauma her body had been through, adding another layer of pain and stress for her.
To help her heal, Willa’s leg has been surgically repaired with 7 screws and a metal plate to keep the bone in place while it mends. The other fractures in her pelvis will take time and rest to heal on their own.
Now, Willa has six long weeks of rest and recovery ahead of her, yet she is still pushing through. She’s endured so much, and all she needs now is love, comfort, and support.
